A fine home win over Salem followed by a slim road loss to Exeter last week left coach Joe McCune and his Londonderry High boys’ lacrosse squad contemplating their 5-3 record as they rolled into this week.
An exceptional start to the Lancers’ match with the Salem High Blue Devils in Londonderry on Thursday, May 1, set the locals off on the way to a 14-5 drubbing of that struggling opponent.
McCune’s crew potted eight goals in the first quarter – while holding Salem to just a single score – and led 9-3 at halftime. And the Lancers went on to blank the Blue Devils by a 2-0 margin in the third quarter on the way to the fine win.
David Wiedenfeld was good for a goal and four assists, Kyle Hussey netted four goals, Nick Yennaco scored twice and assisted twice, Shayne Holland scored three goals, Devin Brunet and Lewis Carroll each scored once and assisted once, Sam Hastings and John Derhak each scored a goal, and Eric Coburn and Scott Beedham each notched an assist.
The victors received six saves from Erik Kenison and three from Dan Kirby.
The win was the 5-2 Lancers’ fifth in their previous six matches, while 2-5 Salem dropped its third decision in its previous four contests.
But the LHS team’s road trip to Exeter last Saturday, May 3, didn’t end up being as productive for the locals, who dropped an 11-8 decision to the home-standing Blue Hawks.
The Lancers trailed 4-3 after one period, 6-5 at the half, and then 9-6 rolling into the fourth and final period.
Yennaco bagged two goals and dealt out two assists, Wiedenfeld was good for a goal and a helper, Holland and Derhak also had a goal and an assist apiece, and Carroll, Coburn, and Brunet each scored once. Lancers’ keeper Kenison turned aside 14 Exeter shots.
But the Lancers jumped right back on the winning path this past Monday in Concord with a 6-5 overtime win over the host Concord High Crimson Tide.
Yennaco scored twice, Wiedenfeld was good for a goal and an assist, Kyle Hussey, Coburn, and Holland each scored once, and Scott Beedham got one assist.
Kenison made nine saves in the LHS cage, and Kirby made one.
