LHS Boy Spikers Get Shut Out, Then Win a Shutout

The Londonderry High boys’ volleyball squad’s home match against the rival Pinkerton Academy Astros didn’t go anything like first-year coach John Vaughn or his Lancers would have liked last week. But you didn’t catch the LHS bunch hanging around lamenting the loss.

After suffering the decisive, 3-0 defeat at the hands of those Astros Tuesday, April 22, the team rebounded to hand the visiting Coe-Brown Northwood contingent a 3-0 defeat three days later.

In the stinging loss to PA, the Londonderry bunch saw the visiting Astros grab individual set wins of 25-6, 25-13, and 25-18.

The hosts received seven assists from Spenser Flood, three kills and a block from Grant Peters, three kills each from Nick Winn and Nick Stevens, three digs from Alex Champa, and a block from Mike Russell.

But all of the numbers were far more pleasing for the Londonderry bunch in its drubbing of what is a young and seemingly inexperienced Coe-Brown Academy last Friday, starting with the positive set scores of 25-9, 25-10, and 25-12.

Flood washed over the proceedings with his 15 assists and five service aces, Winn was a definite winner for the winners with his 10 digs and eight kills, and Matt Gendron tallied eight assists for his side.

Additionally, Jason Parker was good for seven service aces and six kills, and Stevens and Nick Brodeur each booked five kills.

The victory made the Londonderry crew 2-3 on the still-young 2014 season, with definite signs of growth appearing.
