The Londonderry High School Athletic Leadership Council is looking for nominees for a revived LHS Hall of Fame.
In June the Council and adviser Crystal Rich presented their plan to the School Board, which approved the reestablishment of the program. Now all they need are nominees.
Laura Doherty, a senior and member of the Leadership Council, said the program has been dormant for about 10 years. “It’s a good way to honor people who have not gotten the credit they deserve,” Doherty said.
Though she is a two-season athlete, participating in soccer and crew, Doherty said the vision of the Leadership Council goes beyond sports. “It can be anyone who has made an impact,” she said, “with a charity, someone who works on the athletic fields, someone who helps behind the scenes.” LHS alumni of five years or more are eligible, she said.
“What we’re looking for,” Doherty said, “is anyone who embodies the Lancer spirit.”
The process works with community members nominating graduates for the honor.
This year there is no limit on the number of nominees they will accept, Doherty said, though in the future they may restrict the amount in the final cut. “But right now we’re trying to make up for lost time,” she said.
The nominations go to members of a Selection Committee who review the applications. “It’s up to them,” Doherty said. But if someone doesn’t make the cut this year, they stay in a pool for nominees, she added.
Those chosen will be honored at a Hall of Fame Dinner Nov. 26, and will have their names and possibly photos on a special wall, Doherty said.
“Right now we’re in the process of getting the forms out,” she said.
The team is working on the composition of the nominating committee and is looking for one or two community members, Doherty said. While they have several alumni on staff, they are also open to alumni outside the teaching field, she said.
“We would love to have a well-rounded group of inductees – artists, musicians, athletes, parent volunteers,” she said.
Nominations are due Oct. 1. For more information or to obtain a nomination form, visit the school Web site. Nominations forms may be mailed to the school or e-mailed to Rich at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Why are they reviving the Hall of Fame? For Doherty, it’s so no alumnus will be overlooked. “I feel it’s important to highlight the people who work behind the scenes,” she said. “We take them for granted. We need to be mindful, and give them the recognition they deserve.”
