Col. (Ret.) Ernest F. Jacobs Jr., 90, of Londonderry died Aug. 3, 2014, in his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on May 28, 1924, a son of the late Ernest F. Sr. and Charlotte (Diefenbacher) Jacobs.
Col. Jacobs served his country with the U.S. Army and was a combat veteran of three wars – World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a recipient of numerous medals including the Bronze Star Medal with V device, two Purple Hearts, and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a member of the St. Joseph Masonic Lodge in St. Joseph, Mo., and of the American Legion Post #27 in Londonderry.
He enjoyed trout fishing with his grandson, collecting model airplanes and doing yard work.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joyce (Terry) Jacobs; his four children, Richard Terry Jacobs and his wife Kathleen, Michael Ernest Jacobs, Steven Paul Jacobs and his wife, Christine, and Linda Jacobs Ballantyne and her husband, Harry K. Ballantyne Jr.; five grandchildren, Marine Sergeant Sean P. Jacobs Sr., Joseph Danahy, Sean Danahy, Caitlyn Danahy, and Evan Danahy; four great-grandchildren, Sean Jr., Ella, Ryan, and Brody; his brother, Fred Edward Jacobs; and many nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services will be held by the family. The burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., at a later date. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, of Derry and Londonderry is assisting the family with arrangements.
