Head Shaving Event to Benefit Local Firefighter’s Cancer Fight

The Londonderry Fire Department has organized a “head shaving event” to raise money for Firefighter Zach O’Brien, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The Department has also started selling T-shirts to show their support for O’Brien, whose father is Fire Chief Darren O’Brien, and to raise money to help him with the costs of treatment.

O’Brien was diagnosed in February at the age of 22.

The head shaving to raise funds for O’Brien is to be held on Monday, May 16 at 280 Mammoth Road at noon.

A hairstylist has volunteered to shave participants’ heads for $10, with all the money raised to help pay for O’Brien’s treatment.

The Department also plans to “auction heads” to be shaved, with a list of dignitaries who will part with their locks to support O’Brien.

“We will also gladly take funds for people that you don’t want to have shaved,” Battalion Chief Mike McQuillen said in an email announcing the event.

If the Department raises $5,000, Town Manager Kevin Smith has volunteered to shave his head in support of O’Brien.

Those who wish to participate in the shaving event may email Mike McQuillen at mmcquillen@londonderrynh.org. Those who wish to purchase a T-shirt to show support for O’Brien should contact Chris Schofield at ChristopherASchofield@gmail.com.
