Mr. Joseph A. Callina, of Londonderry, NH and formerly of Somerville, MA, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, Sept. 16, he was 93. Born in Boston and raised in Medford, he was the son of the late Anthony and Nancy (Picone) Callina. He was the beloved husband of the late Grace (Spalvero) Callina; together they raised their family in Somerville.
Joseph served honorably during WWII in the US Army Air Corps. After working in the shoe industry he began a 19-year career with the MBTA. He worked his way through the ranks beginning as driver, a train operator, then retired as a maintenance shop supervisor. Joe loved being outdoors in the sunshine and enjoyed his daily morning walks around the neighborhood, which he continued into his 90’s. He could often be found working in the yard or puttering around the house. In earlier years he and his wife Grace enjoyed their second home in Delray Beach, Florida. He was a longtime member of the Carmen’s Union Local 589 MBTA and member of the Commander’s Club with the DAV.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted children, Carol Cronin and her husband Bob of Londonderry, NH, Al Callina and his wife Sue of Salem, NH, Marie Callina of Windham, NH and the late Nancy Piontkoski. Cherished Grandpa of Joe, Michael, Heidi, Lauren, Kelly and Jeff and Great Grandpa of Mia, Zoe and Avery. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Procession from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville on Friday at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in St. Clement Church, Somerville/Medford at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Calling Hours Thursday 4pm to 7pm.
