Lancer Alumni Has Bench, Backstop Named in Honor of Past Player

Cassie Burbine, Londonderry High School alumni and daughter of Skip Burbine, the man who the Londonderry Tennis Courts were named after, recently had a bench and tennis backboard erected in honor of James “Jay” Hayes IV. Jay, a member of the LHS Class of 2020, and varsity tennis team member, died just before graduating college in April of 2024. Cassie was friends with Hayes, through coaching him at Skip’s annual Tennis Camp, and felt it appropriate to create a memorial at the Skip Burbine Tennis Courts. On Saturday, May 10, family members, classmates and friends gathered for the unveiling and paid respect by leaving a rose on the bench, which overlooks the court he played on. Cassie raised nearly $14,000 through a GoFundMe site to fund to project. Cassie is pictured with Jay’s mom, Johanna Hayes, at the dedication. Photos by Chris Paul
