LHS Baseball Edged by Dover, Strike Out 17 vs. North

After taking an early lead, the Londonderry High baseball squad found itself faced with having to make a comeback against the undefeated Dover High Green Wave at LHS last Friday, May 2. And that comeback attempt fell just short.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the seventh inning, the Lancers got to within a run with their come-back performance. But the final score wound up at 4-3 in the Green Wave’s favor, with the Dover bunch advancing to 7-0 on the campaign and Londonderry moving to 5-2.

The hosts snagged a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning, but that was the only run scored until the top half of the fifth, when Dover managed to string together enough scratch hits off LHS pitcher Tom Corey and his relief hurlers to plate four runs and take the 4-1 advantage.

The fourth and final Dover run – which wound up being the game-winner – crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk.

The Lancers got two of the three runs they required to knot the score in the latter half of the seventh frame but couldn’t plate that elusive tying run.

“The offense was out of sync for most of the game, leaving close to 10 men on base overall,” lamented LHS coach Brent Demas. “The boys showed fight in the end, but they just ran out of outs today.”

The Lancers only managed to collect four hits in the defeat, with each one coming from a different source.

But the Lancers returned to the winning track – and snagged their third win in their previous four games – with a 2-0 nipping of the Nashua  North Titans in the Gate City this past Monday.

Senior pitcher Rob Del Signore was nothing short of magnificent for his squad, throwing a glittering one-hitter with 17 strikeouts and just one walk allowed. The win made Londonderry 7-2 on the campaign, while the struggling North side slid to 3-7 with its sixth consecutive loss.
