LHS Boy Cagers Win Big, Then Drop One

The Londonderry High boys’ basketball squad busted a frustrating, five-game losing streak with a blowout victory early last week, but then slipped back onto the losing path at the end of the week. Coach Jeff Gustavson’s now 5-12 LHS group ended the losing skid by thumping the winless Timberlane Owls of Plaistow by a 71-38 count in Londonderry on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The Lancers held a modest lead of 16-10 at the end of one quarter, but by outscoring the Owls by the massive margin of 27-7 in the second period they found themselves up by a 43-17 margin at the halftime break.

The victors had four players finish in double digits in scoring, led by Rob Wilson with 17 points and seven rebounds, Max Coleman with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Taylor Simpson with 13 points, and Mike Russell with 10 points in 10 minutes of court time. Coleman and Wilson both netted 17 points in the Lancers’ 64-52 loss to Nashua South at LHS last Friday night, Feb. 22, with Wilson also pulling down 13 rebounds.

Londonderry dropped its sixth decision in its last seven contests in that battle, trailing 16-10 after one quarter, 26-24 after two periods, and 50-36 going into the final quarter. South advanced to 13- 3 on the regular season with its victory. The Lancer guys stepped into this week facing one final regular season contest against a Winnacunnet crew from Hampton that was hovering right around the .500 mark at 8-8. That contest is slated to be played this Friday night, March 1.
