Consecutive victories over a pair of Manchester opponents last week left the Londonderry High girls’ volleyball squad to contemplate both the mini winning streak it had built up and its 2-1 record as it bounded into this week.
The 0-1 Lady Lancers vanquished both the Manchester Central Little Green and the Manchester Memorial Lady Crusaders in impressive shutouts to advance to 2-1.
In the 3-0 blanking of Central in the Queen City on Wednesday, Sept. 5, the locals bagged set victories of 25-5, 27-25, and 25-13 in claiming their first match win of the young campaign.
“The offense was led by Sarah Joe with five kills and Kelsey Sanborn with four kills, along with 17 assists from Anna Haas,” said LHS second-year coach Matt Leonard. “Defensively, Laura Haas and Emma Detellis led the way with 11 and seven kills respectively.”
Anna and Laura Haas along with Britney Clark combined for some 16 aces on the night, with Laura hammering through nine of her own.
Then back in the LHS gymnasium on Friday night, Sept. 7, Londonderry got what it hoped would be a lengthy winning streak rolling by handing the visiting Memorial High mob a 3-0 defeat.
The Lancers bagged individual set wins of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-10, and they were paced by veteran Maddie Sanborn with her 11 kills, five digs, and eight service aces.
Other significant contributions came from Sarah Joe (six kills), Anna Haas (16 assists), Natalie Brooks (four blocks), and Clark (seven digs and two aces).
The Lancers entered this week with a short road trip over to Hudson to take on Alvirne’s Lady Broncos on Monday.
And the local girls built upon their modest winning streak by besting their hosts by a 3-1 tally to move their 2018 record to 3-1.
Coach Leonard and his crew then looked quite optimistically at the remainder of a busy week which was to include home contests against
Timberlane of Plaistow on Wednesday the 12th and Winnacunnet from Hampton on Friday Sept. 14.
