Lorraine Smith

Lorraine Elizabeth Smith, 78, of Londonderry, formerly of Burlington, Vt., died Feb. 20, 2013 at the Mount Carmel Nursing Home in Manchester. She was born in Burlington, Vt., on June 7, 1934, the daughter of Arnold A. and Elizabeth I. (Demers) Murray. She was educated in Burlington Catholic schools and was a graduate of the Nursing School at Bishop Degoesbriand Hospital in 1955. She worked as a nurse for 42 years, mostly at Mary Fletcher Hospital. She was a member of St. Mark’s Parish in Burlington, Vt., where she was the first female Eucharistic Minister. She also served on the Parish Council four times, and was chairperson three times. She enjoyed delivering the Eucharist to shut-ins for the Church. More recently, she was a parishioner of St. Jude Parish in Londonderry. She was active in her children’s lives through school athletics and activities throughout her working years. She enjoyed gardening, baking pies, and reading. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Everest Smith of Londonderry; two sons, Murray Smith and wife, Debby, of Randolph, Mass., and Brian Smith and wife, Susan Cohen, of Colchester, Vt.; two daughters, Karen Boccia and husband, James, of Londonderry, and Kristin Smith and husband, Nicholas Baer, of Elkins; grandchildren Nicholas, James and Alyssa Boccia, and Marliese, Eva Lian and Elias Baer, and William and Rebecca McKinnon and Timothy Cohen; two sisters, Marilyn Riley and husband, James, of Cape Cod, Mass., and Lynne Welch and husband, Richard, of Rochester, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting hours were Feb. 21 at Ready Funeral & Cremation Service in Burlington, Vt. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 22, at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church in Burlington, Vt. Burial will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington, Vt.
