North School Bears Win Fifth Grade Battle of the Books

The North Elementary School Bears fifth-grade team took home the trophy at the annual “Battle of the Books” challenge for the third consecutive year. Prior to the three victories by North School, teams from Matthew Thornton had a three-year reign as the number-one readers.

Each year the three Londonderry Elementary Schools send teams of fifth-graders to represent their school at the annual battle, hosted by the Middle School. The competition replaced the annual spelling bee a number of years ago, and has teams recalling information from the books they have read during the school year. Points are given for correct answers along with spelling the title completely and correctly. This year, the North team pulled away in the final rounds with an overwhelming win of 104-points, over South School with 80 and Matthew Thornton with 38-points. Members of the winning team, pictured at top left, were: Eileen McIntire, Ben Boyle, Liam Conlin, Vincent DeShiro, Sadie Adolf and Danny Seichephine.
