Members of the Londonderry Police Department are offering self-defense classes for women starting on Thursday, April 12 for women ages sixteen and up.
Some young women may be nervous about going away to college for the first time or want to know the basics of how to defend themselves in general. For the next two months, there will be a women’s basic level self-defense class taught by certified instructors from the Londonderry Police Department.
The class requires no payment for students. There is limited space however, so students are encouraged to register early to be sure they receive a time slot.
Class dates are as follows Thursday April 12, Thursday April 19, Thursday May 3, Thursday and May 10. The classes will be located at the Londonderry Police Station from 2:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Why is this so important? Self-defense classes teach you how to defend yourself in a variety of different ways and situations, according to the official Livestrong website. If you know self-defense, you are less likely to feel anxious in public and will know the basics of how to quickly disarm an attacker.
The classes also offer exercise benefits such as muscle toning and strengthening. They can improve overall physical condition and also boost mental health.
Engaging in a self-defense class can also lead to a new found self-confidence, especially in women. According to the official Livestrong website, people develop more confidence in themselves and their surroundings after taking a self-defense class.
This type of training helps folks to be more aware of their surroundings and be prepared for the unexpected at all times.
Knowing that you have the power to defend yourself can also help you feel more comfortable with the world and your surroundings. You are more likely to get out and explore and meet new people.
To register for class, please send an email to Sgt. Joseph Bellino at jbellino@londonderry.org with your first and last name, date of birth, email address, and telephone number. You may also contact him if you have any questions about the class.
