Londonderry High School junior skiing standout Bryeton Evarts capped off her strong 2017-18 competitive season in truly noteworthy fashion last weekend by competing in the 36th Annual Eastern High School Alpine Championships on Cannon Mountain in Franconia.
The Lady Lancer was one of 24 Granite State high school skiers and some 250 total athletes from across the Eastern United States and beyond to participate in that major event held last Thursday through Sunday, March 8-11.
Skiers from as far west as Wisconsin and as far south as North Carolina took part in the 2018 event, which has been held in New Hampshire over the last several years. It has also been held in other states in past years, including Vermont.
The 2018 event was hosted by the Franconia Ski Club at Cannon Mountain’s Mittersill Ski Area, and it once again allowed high school teams representing all states within the eastern region as well as other regional guest teams to compete.
Evarts and her 23 New Hampshire teammates – who hail from a total of 19 Granite State schools – were selected for the Eastern Championships following the state’s Meets of Champions early this month.
Evarts had qualified for the MOC’s with some strong work at the Division I championships at Gunstock Mountain in mid-February. She helped her Lady Lancers to a strong fifth place finish by winding up second overall individually.
At the MOC’s, Evarts wound up a fine 10th overall out of some 54 competitors, placing a superb sixth in the giant slalom and 14th in the slalom.
Granite State squads have won championships at the annual event in the past, but over the last several years the contingents from Vermont have come out on top and ruled the slopes.
